Presenting: Annotations

Yes, just when you thought you had enough of ways to create micro content, the TWaddler strikes again and gives you…

Annotations

This allows you to add small floating annotations to tiddlers or to the wiki page. The annotations are pure CSS and they’re all stored in a central, user created, tiddler.

This should be useful to draw attention to elements on the page or to guide users. I believe it could be useful for the issues discussed in the onboarding newcomers thread.

Hi twMat

This looks neat! But I don’t understand it quite yet. You might need to do a bit more onboarding as well. I see that the CSS is in myannotations. But I don’t see, either in that tiddler or the other ones, how they are ‘assigned’ to the About tiddler as opposed to the Notes tiddler. In other words, I have no idea how to use it.

Mat I think this is great.

little automation of the settings eg range sliders for numbers etc… would make it even easier.

Of course there is an issue with us knowing the classes and where they are. I have argued for some time we should document them, I know they can be found with inspect but that is somewhat fiddly, in fact your annotations would be a good way to illustrate them with an annotation on one of every class and location.

Nice work

Thanks for feedback guys.

If you look in the Controlpanel you’ll see a tab named “Annotations”.

But, yeah, I should eat my own dogfood and use it to clarify how to use it

@twMat I just started playing with this and I think it’s a great idea!

Note that for some reason the first tiddler I made to test it had an apostrophe in the title stobot's tiddler and that seemed to upset it, so you might need a bit more escaping / triple-doubles somewhere. Update tried one with a space in it and that seemed to break it a bit too.

Thanks for the change to the instructions. I get it now!

I have also added this to the toolmap under Tiddler modifications.

I think, it would be nice to also have the “stamp” style, that you used on some of your “beta” wikis. … But I’m not sure if they have been CSS only

Thanks everyone. I’m working on some tweaks but it might take some time.

@pmario - thanks, the Stamper is neat but I think that people would only make one stamp per wiki (right?) so is would be a bit “expensive” to include in that particular design. The Annotations are intended to be used in several places in a wiki so all of them use the same design, just with different parameter values.
