I’ve been seeing stuff about the UK’s Online Safety Act that, apparently, has implications for any forum with users in the UK… is this going to be an issue here?
My own view is that our community being hosted overseas, small and public means that it would be amongst the last to face scrutiny. There is a good chance that in the meantime the outcry about much larger and more significant sites having to close will provoke some changes. For the moment, a wait and see approach seems reasonable for us.
Here’s a recent article from The Telegraph that shows that concern about the OSA is already featuring in mainstream media:
is this going to be an issue here?
I’d be very surprised (and very upset) if this ever happens. I’m a newcomer here, but since the moment I’ve started to read it on a regular basis, it has been an exemplary forum with smart people, zero drama and no offtopic content (which - and this is important - has been the result of common sense rather than misc enforced policies and weaponized Codes of Conduct). I very much hope this status quo will never change or be influenced from outside, albeit I acknowledge concern about such matters is real.
@jeremyruston thanks for your comments and assurance… I’m not very familiar with what this all means but it seemed there might be some impact at some point in the future – either to the underlying ‘hosting service’ or more directly to the forum itself.
This has to be one of the best forums I’ve used but, rather, my concern was what might be foisted on us by external forces, over which we have little control. I think @jeremyruston has confirmed it’s fine for the moment…
