Ok, I apologise – not everything for Windows is in the same thread.
Here’s the post that talks about side-loading an extension, and describes how you can hand-edit the accompanying text fix.
So I think I worked out how to compile and set up the extension and saver for Chrome on Linux (not Snap). Are there any brave Linux users that want to try it?
