Life capture - seeking ideas

Hi Folks,

I am interested in making full use of my mobile phone and tablet and their device features, aquiring data for my wikis.

I am making this a public discussion to seek ideas, tips tricks and plugins etc… from the community and perhaps with a view to a tiddlyhost template so you can make your own.

This is just an aquisition process I am interested in so I am looking to setup a private tiddlyhost site with various capture tools, idealy single click.

I would like to capture things such as;

  • Images into different groups
    • Food log - just photograph every serve ort annotate
    • Product details in shops
    • Screenshots from a mobile browser screen eg product to buy
    • Capture completed walk details and mapping from mobile app
  • Voice memos in different groups
    • Must to do
    • Capture info eg record someone telling my my address
    • General Ideas
    • Subject ideas such as book (as I am writting a book)
  • GPS or W3W locations and related notes
    • Photos containing gps location at snap
  • Journal and textural notes including in different groups
  • List capture and checklists eg shopping list
  • URLs
  • Peoples contact info
  • Transient data I may need to refer to when out an about eg address to go to, name of shop…

Strategy;

  • To accomodate possible internet loss I will add Browser Storage for tempoary back up until next sucessful save
  • maintain meta data on each capture so I can tell when and where it was taken (perhaps current device)
    • Access exif data on images?
  • Store items by name or metadata date/time so it is organised automaticaly (allow notes if different)
    • Keep this per tiddler for easy drag and drop to other wikis
  • Allow annotations on any capture (multiline text field), tags…
  • Use for capture but have tools to transfer items to other wikis back at home as needed. This will idealy be supported by allowing
    • transcription of audio notes to text batch or online
    • Take one or more snapshot from a short video then trash the video
    • Zipping a set of items for transfer to file system
    • JSON export for transfer as a set
  • Split to multiple wikis if needed

Once we have something captured there will be cases where we pass these on to somone else, so It would be worth considering how to send captured content on the device;

  • Send an sms
  • Send an Email
  • Copy and paste into a messaging app

In many cases variouse apps may have links or URI’s that would allow a TiddlyWiki to interact with a local app. Perhaps we can research and document these methods for inclusion in peoples wikis?

  • What other outbound or intergrations can we do that makes sense on top of our capture wiki?

I know I have had difficulty sending an email from TiddlyWiki with an attachement such as image or audio.

If you open https://capture.tiddlyhost.com/ in your mobile/tablet you can start experimenting. Some observations

  • If my phone is playing audio and I record, I can actualy record what I am listning to on the phone, where many of the recorder apps one installs can scilence what you are listning to. However I expect we may want an option to stop or pause other audio.

This is a projet I consider to be desirable : to use the smartphone as an augmented field notebook. Some people think that using smartphones could attract more people to do computing. I’m not that convinced, but the kind of project you show here could help achieve that, especially for people invested in collecting information about what happens around them and their environment.
Your demo is very interesting and promising.
All the best.

Thanks @alanc if you think of any features or ideas about what we may include, I will try and do a proof of concept POC

Good conceptualisation!

From my point of view a clever tool like that will, likely, get powerful by having two main levels … ??

  1. Level 1 – A Meta level that handles “capture logic” according to the need;
  2. Level 2 – The UI visible level for input (logic set via Level 1)

Anyway. The broad concept seems good.

Just a thought!

I was thinking of Using TiddlyTools PasteUP to create a visual collection of items. It is installed on that site. Feel free to build and share and example if you want?

Could you explain that a little further please?

I’ll try be brief. In any case I’m not an expert.

The easiest way for me to explain it is to assert 3 concepts relevant to “capture”…

  1. TRACKING – Journals are a form of tracking. Any means of recording “an happening” (any media);
  2. PROJECTED AIMS – ToDo lists et. al. are a form of projection in time. A means to record “what is wished to happen”;
  3. EVALUATION – Recording of analysis, or opinion. A recording of “judgement upon the occured”

Just an example of types of “moment capture”. Many other ways are possible to slice-that-cake.

ANYWAY. My point is a “Meta” level co-ordinates the relevant UI for “capture” in relation to the capture “type” needed.

Hope this is clear!
