Google-fonts site updates, request

Dear all,

Could someone who has the right github savvy add the following site to the Links Aggregator (recently relocated, as @jeremyruston noted a couple days ago)?

The site is https://google-fonts.tiddlyhost.com/

How is this site different from the other Aggregator links tagged “fonts”?

It adds:

  • wysiwyg previews for 400+ fonts (placeholder or custom text, variable axis sliders)
  • quick browsing via font categories (including a new intersectional tags filter – want to find a condensed, monospaced, serif font?)
  • curated list of fonts that avoid conflating visually-similar glyphs (IO10l)
  • technique tips for font use (such as svg integration and image backgrounds for fonts)
  • granular drag-and-drop interface to pull chosen fonts into a tiddlywiki.

As always, feedback is welcome! And thanks to the many folks here whose bits of code have contributed to the features above!

Thanks!

Fantastic resource thanks.

Nice, but the colour selection “yellow on white” is really difficult to read.

This is amazing! Thank you!

@pmario, I wonder whether the helper text color is a bit better now – Palette tweaked. (It should only be “helper text”, not tiddler titles themselves, that have this lighter color.) If you still think it’s hard to read, I’ll break away from the attempt to shoehorn the site into the google-logo color scheme. >shrug<

Hi @Springer,
I would recommend to add a link to a HowTo tiddler on the first page.
The HowTo can explain in a simple language how one can add a Google font to his/her Tiddlywiki.
The best would be a drag and drop of a font of choice and …

Ciao @Springer & @Mohammad

@Springer’s sampling of Google fonts is very good. It simplifies enormously identifying fonts that you might need.

Echoing @Mohammad, I do think final usage methods do need be understood. FYI there are 3 approaches to use I have come across …

1 - Live use of remote Google Fonts (GF)

2 - Full embed of a GF in a TW as a WOFF

3 - Creation of a (light-weight) embedded sub-set of a GF as a WOFF (very useful for limited needs for special characters)

IMO to leverage usage of GF well, finally, one needs consider what method is appropriate to the use case.

Just a comment

There are a couple “how-to” links prominently from the default page (quick from the MenuBar, top of sidebar), but I can make them a bit more prominent since two people are nudging for this.

The site is really about live use of the remote webfonts offered by google. Of course you can embed your own hosted fonts in any html file (downloaded from google or from any other source). You can even build your own fonts  . Maybe I’ll find a way to make a nod to more html-intensive ways to work with fonts… The central goal here is to help tiddlywiki users find what they need and get back to their wikis with the convenience of google’s hosted webfonts.

I have added a note about embedding a subset of weights/styles and/or a subset of characters – something that was on my to-do list. Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you for the effort that went into this @Springer. I have added it to my bookmarks wiki so it should make it to links.tiddlywiki.org soon.

A routine reminder for everyone that Links is supposed to have a weighted presentation of bookmarks according to how many users bookmark the same site, pending enough uptake. Please do share your own bookmarks for indexing on Links.
