Files uploaded to Discourse?

The way we can drop images and files on a post or reply is fantastic. These must be uploaded to the server.

Presumably this consumes storage and the same filename will result in more than one file.

  • What is the long term consequences of this? Storage availability on the host etc…
  • Is there a way we can review and reuse links to the same images rather than reupload etc…
  • Could images/files be tagged etc… for reuse and lookup?
  • Can we update a file to correct a mistake?

Backups of Database Exports plus all images takes up about 50MB of space today.

For all intents and purposes, for GBs worth of files, the cost is “free”. The ~$12/month server includes a 50GB hard drive which has about 30GB available on it, and includes weekly backups. Today, bandwidth ends up being a bigger cost, but that also is bundled and is no where close to being an issue.

I haven’t researched any of your other questions for Discourse, feel free to do that and report back here.

You can re-use images whenever you like by copy/pasting the URL.

One thing to note is that if you include a remote image — Discourse will copy it and host it locally.
