If you ever find yourself lost in the woods or marooned on a tropical island with nothing but your TiddlyWiki, make sure you have this Emergency Morse Code Tiddler.

It contains something I’m calling “ULMorse”, which means “Upper-Lowercase Morse”. It will help you remember Morse and has the added advantage of being typeable and human-readable at the same time.

Morse Code is still used today, in case you were wondering. Radio signals of clicks and tones can be carried much farther than voice and data. Morse can be communicated via anything from your hand, a flashlight and even your eyelids (look up how a POW in Vietnam was able to communicate his position this way while he was in front of a camera).

But more than this, Morse is a handy way we send a quick message across a crowded, noisy hall: GGg OOO OOO ii Nn GGg hhhh OOO MM e. Also fun to communicate with your children when they’re out on the lake.

Thank you. I feel so much safer knowing this is available!

Now I’m “gooing home” too.

That’s pretty cool. I’ve tweaked it a bit, including adding a braille column (I would have added semaphore flags too, but they’re not in unicode it turns out)

Emergency Alphabet Decoder.json (1.7 KB)

I wonder too (and I honestly have no idea if this is possible) if it couldn’t be an x-tiddler-dictionary (maybe a different one per column) and then a macro (function? procedure?) be crafted that could translate words by direct character substitution with values from the dictionary?

(Would I ever need such a tool? Probably not. Would I have one as a local toy? You bet!)

Thanks for pointing that out, Scott!
And it gave me a thought: I wonder which would be easier to read:
GGgOOOiiNnGGg hhhhOOOMMe or GGg OOO ii Nn GGg hhhh OOO MM e
For me, the first would.

Great work! I’ve really wanted to learn braille. Your addition will certainly get me started.
You bring up a good question. Yes, it would certainly be nice to have the translation tool, as you said.
I’ve got another big project coming up that is related to what you’re talking about… big means I’m expecting at least 6000 but probably more than 9000 tiddlers. I’m at about 800 now. But for now, I’m using transclusion as the “vehicle”.

@nemo, you have liberated Braille for the masses.

What would you say to this addition:

HXBraille (Hex-Like Braille)

You people never fail to impress me!

that’s neat, but I think it may be worth looking into a better name than hex-like braille, since “Hex-Braille” exists as a font already: A new Braille font: Hex Braille — TypeDrawers, and maybe an alternative to 0 for the no-dot placeholder, since that needs changing out for representing zero anyway. Perhaps _ since that’s a common typographic way to represent a space? In general though, I like the concept of both that and ULMorse!

That’s amazing! Exactly the kind of thing I was thinking of
