New Release Banner Competition for v5.4.0

image

We’re hoping to release TiddlyWiki v5.4.0 in the second half of March. As usual, we’re holding a competition to design the banner image that is shown on the splash screen and within the opening HelloThere tiddler.

The artwork should reflect some of the changes in the new version. There is an extensive release note that you can explore:

https://tiddlywiki.com/prerelease/

Entries will be accepted until Monday 9th March 2026 at 8am UK time, followed by voting to select the winning entry.

The other rules/guidelines for the competition are:

  • The version number must be clear and readable even when the banner is shown at a reduced size
  • The version number must use the correct punctuation including the “v” prefix and clear full stops between the numbers
  • The image must be a PNG or JPEG of exactly 560x315 pixels
  • Note that the image is displayed at a smaller size on tiddlywiki.com , so check that your artwork is legible at the display size (the scaling is done in order to yield good quality on hi-dpi displays)
  • The bottom 46 pixels will be obscured by the banner text “What’s new in 5.4.0” when it is displayed within HelloThere
  • The image must not include the word “TiddlyWiki”. The banner image is only used in contexts where it is clear that it is about TiddlyWiki
  • Feel free to enter an updated version of artwork that was a runner-up in a previous competition
  • Reply to this message with your entry, or any questions
  • Please give lots of feedback here to encourage the artists

Good luck! I’ll be looking forward to seeing the entries.

Best wishes

Jeremy.

As usual, I’ve updated the TiddlyHost site that tracks version banner contests. Feel free to browse past contests, and enjoy the historical arc of version banner winners. As entries are posted here (and especially if there are more than a couple entries to keep track of), I’ll replicate submissions over there so they can be easily compared.

Hi folks,

There is not much time left for the banner competition. So Be creative

I’ll throw my hat into the ring!

5.4.0 sets TiddlyWiki up for the future. There’s a whole host of new experiences enabled by this version that I’m excited about for the future - WYSIWYG editor, new default layout, and more. I wanted something that captured this new frontier.

The vision: Motovun Jack summiting a mountain to find a beautiful vista - the new experiences unlocked by 5.4.0’s enhancements!

This is made with AI image generation - no problem if that invalidates the submission. I mainly want to share the concept.

My idea is that Motovun Jack pulls out a string of toy balls symbolizing multi-valued variables from the box where the $let widget is located. I used AI to help me generate images, but after multiple adjustments, I was still unsatisfied. The following is a relatively satisfactory version. You might use my idea to regenerate a better banner.

I like it. The only thing would be to add a small dot into the cat eyes. But otherwise it’s a nice idea.

I like this, and agree with @pmario about the eyes. But there is one thing to consider. From the rules above:

  • The bottom 46 pixels will be obscured by the banner text “What’s new in 5.4.0” when it is displayed within HelloThere

I think you would have to move the bottom up (and maybe move the version number down for balance.)

Thank you for your suggestions @pmario @Scott_Sauyet ; I completely agree with your opinions. I have made some adjustments, and here is the new banner image.

I also used AI to create several banner pictures with the same concept but leaning towards a physical style. I will post them in the replies below.

In this image, the rope is replaced with a conveyor belt.

Here are two additional images, I’m sorry they don’t look very realistic physically.

This is by far my favorite of them. The only concerns I have are:

  • first that there’s no clear way of knowing the direction of motion of the balls. This wouldn’t bother much except for the second point:

  • I’m really left wondering why the balls are (a) expanding when they leave the box or (b) shrinking when they enter it.

Neither is a show-stopper. I like this a lot!

@shenzhy16 … You did create several suggestions. … Do you want all of them to be part of the voting phase?

If yes that’s no problem. … Several images from 1 contributor usually “cannibalise” each other. But since we only have 2 contributors this time, it may be an advantage.

Please let me know if I should take all of them, or just a subset. If I do not get any feedback till Tuesday 10th March 2026 - 12:00 UTC … I’ll take them all.

have fun!
Mario

Thank you for paying attention to the images I posted. I think the first image I posted should not be selected to vote because it has a serious issue that the bottom is not free of 46px, and I feel so sorry for my unprofessionalism.

I think they are all cool. I do like the idea of the first 2 ones. But in the first one Jack is a bit “spooky” without the eyes.

For me it’s funny to see, that humans “need” eyes done right. If there is something “out of place” we recognise it.

The vote will be up soon.
