Why Did LLMs Steal Our Em-Dashes?
Opinion from the Dark Side.

As a lover of em dashes in my own writing – they break up text so nice and natural-like – I hate the fact that people are using this as an indication of AI writing. Moreover, I heard that certain phrases like moreover are being used by college admissions office as indicators of AI generated content. Sad if true.

I usually find indicative content of AI usage to be ‘i could rewrite this for you in a more formal style’ or ‘this covers everything needed to meet the criteria’ still sat at the bottom of the students work.

Real talk, I went to a graduate admissions fair where the admissions panel was literally begging students just to proofread their AI generated content before submission for this very reason.

I like em-dash – I never really got the hang of semi-colons – and don’t get me started on colons – and sometimes I change topics – where are those cheap Segways we were promised, eh? – gotta dash –

Sorry to be a pedant (or ‘that person’) but it seems to me that – is an en dash while — is an em dash, which is somewhat longer… of course there’s also the regular dash/hyphen (much shorter) and many others to boot. See Dash - Wikipedia .

This is a segue on the SINCLAIR C5
In Britain in 1985 the Sinclair C5 electric tricycle was launched as a solution to all commuting problems by Sir Clive Sinclair (creator of the “pocket calculator”) …
It failed.
Mainly because people feared using it—being below drivers eyelines—you’d end up getting squished by a lorry/big truck.
