just out of curiosity, to roughly gauge opinion (not trying to shut down any other discussion!)…

  • tiddlywiki’s name should be changed
  • tiddlywiki’s name should not be changed

i chose them by scrolling back through this thread, TidWiki and Tweaky have been suggested mutiple times by different people (TidWiki also being vouched for by Jeremy) and TWX had that killer logo design and is also used in some internal discussions.

i’d like to stress again that this is just for gauging thoughts among us reading this thread, not as an estimation of public acceptance or to be used for actual decision making.

Changing TiddlyWiki alone is not enough. Tiddler has to be changed too.

agreed! i had that in the poll originally, but removed it because i didn’t want to split up the results. (i.e, if i added “change just TW” and “change TW and the tiddler”, the “i want change” group would be split while the “i don’t want change” group would not be, biasing the results).

i was hoping to use the poll to summarize this thread, and get the opinions of the people posting in this (three-year-old 200±post) thread. there are a lot of posts and posters here, and it is hard to tell what the prevailing outcome is from this extended brainstorming session.

i think if we did a wider poll it should have more background context and the questions should be structured differently, though that would be useful as well to get a better approximation of a general user opinion.

Unusually for me, an idea for a TiddlyWiki slogan/tagline popped into my head (perhaps because somebody else has already suggested it and it made it into my subliminal memory):

"Make something of your notes"

It’s a play on the two meanings of the phrase “make something” in English: “to construct something” and “to get value from”.

I think it conveys some of the essential aspects of TiddlyWiki: that its primary use case is note taking, that it helps you get value from your notes, and that it lets you construct interactive things from your notes.

If one thought “note taking” was too narrow, perhaps it could be “make something of your data”.

At the moment, “HelloThere” has the following tagline:

“Welcome to TiddlyWiki, a unique non-linear notebook for capturing, organising and sharing complex information”

I think it’s a clunky tagline because it is a list of adjectives followed by a list of verbs.

So, I propose to demote the existing tagline to a plain paragraph, and replace it with “Make something of your notes”.

That is, unless somebody can suggest a better candidate?

I really like it, great double meaning. I do think the biggest differentiator of TW is the almost unlimited ability to “assemble” notes into any shape or program.

From a marketing standpoint I would suggest thinking through the name, tagline, and terms (namely Tiddler) as a package.

Tagline: “Make something of your notes”
Term for tiddler: “Note”
Program name:
Notecraft
Notebench
Nota (Latin for note)
Noteforge
Noteweaver

Sounds very close to “make something of your life”. So wonder if there is something more broadly meaningful than data.

Perhaps?

“Make something of your digital life”

Tag lines realy do help I think to promote ideas around tiddlywiki as I have said prefer I also like calling it the “TiddlyWiki Platform”.

Just an aside. My first thought of “Make something of your notes” is the absolutely perfect book title “Making Money” from Sir Terry Pratchett, about the introduction of paper notes by the Royal bank and Royal Mint. The title is a word play on “minting” money and also making money.

I’ve gone ahead and updated HelloThere to use the tagline I proposed. It is not intended to be the last word; I am open to further tweaks and changes. The intention of putting it live is to make it easier for people to assess, and to break the long run of not making substantive changes to our shop front.

I definitely like the tagline, although I prefer the format first presented: “Make something of your notes.” Adding “with TiddlyWiki” is all right, although unnecessary, but I think changing from “something” to “more” mostly loses the pleasant double-meaning that makes the slogan inspiring.

I second what @Scott_Sauyet said.

Also some nit picking, I’d go for a softer background color for the badge. That looks a bit like a warning or error notification.

I actually like the double meaning of “Make more of your Notes with TiddlyWiki”, as in:

  • Get more value from your notes (because TiddlyWiki increases the usefulness of those notes)
    AND
  • Increase the number of notes you create (because TiddlyWiki is easy to use)

My idle thoughts on the difference between “Make something of your notes” and the revised “Make More of Your Notes with TiddlyWiki”

Two things to consider here IMHO.

  1. “Make Something of Your Notes” vs “Make More of Your Notes”
  2. tack “With TiddlyWiki” to the end.
  • Tackling the second point first, I think adding “With Tiddlywiki” is not great for the TW webpage itself. or when the slogan/subtitle is paired with “TiddlyWiki”. ie, cases where “TiddlyWiki” is already stated, or reasonably known by context.
  • For the first point, I lean towards the “Something” rather than the "More, but don’t have a strong view on.
  • A wild third point appears: I do think changing “of” to “with” improves either one, (though perhaps at the danger of losing some of those double meanings, and also can’t really tack “with TiddlyWiki” at the end any longer, because repeating “with” is weird)

Anyway, thus:

Make Something With Your Notes

This to me speaks more directly to the strength I find in TW - that it’s a place to make and store and organise notes and build structure with my notes. My content is the focus and core of what is built.

As I previously noted, the above phrase has a double meaning:

  • “Make a greater quantity of your notes by using TiddlyWiki”
    or
  • “Using TiddlyWiki increases the value/utility of your notes”

I think that one of the more important goals of the “tag line” should be that it is able to appear as a stand-alone phrase that serves to promote TiddlyWiki, separate from its use on the TW webpage itself.

While keeping “with TiddlyWiki” in the slogan might seem somewhat redundant when it appears on the TW webpage, it would be essential if it is ever used in other contexts such as advertisments and related marketing materials.

Agreed. I specifically called it out as redundant in the context of the webpage, where between the slogan, the heading, the paragraph and four dot points, “TiddlyWiki” appeared in 6 out of 7. It felt like it was leaning on the word like the old smurf joke (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Smurfing ). Perhaps also in danger of semantic satiation, though I don’t know if that’s more or less likely given it’s an uncommon word to most people.

Perhaps a short version sans ‘TiddlyWiki’ for where the context is already unambiguously TiddlyWiki, and a “with TiddlyWiki” only when it makes sense to have it?

As for the double meaning? I’m in the “the something” version is a more pleasant double meaning to me, but the distinction is trivial. The two meanings you list and the two Jeremy listed have little between them IMHO. But “Make something…” is riffing on the “make something of your life”, and that tips the balance for me.

tl;dr: I think Jeremy’s intitial draft idea of “Make Something Of Your Notes” is the best short version, and a slightly longer “With TiddlyWiki” suffix when appropriate (and perhaps a reasonable default outside the TW page itself)

Maybe splitting the tagline into multiple lines is more semantic. I tried it as below and it looks much more semantic.

Of course, further work on style might be needed. But I’m not good at CSS, so I had to give up.

The first line indicates a salutation and welcome, the second line indicates the uniqueness of TiddlyWiki, the third line indicates what the user can use it for, and the fourth line indicates that it can be shared via TiddlyWiki. A separate description might better characterise TiddlyWiki.

I’m not a software developer, and I haven’t done similar market research, but I have observed that many products are advertised line by line, and rarely through a full sentence, especially a complex one.

Hi, I’ve been using Tiddlywiki for a few years now but only recently joined this forum, so definitely a new kid on the block. Nevertheless and for what it’s worth:

(a) I like the new line and especially the play on words but then I am a native English speaker;

but (b) I also think of my own use of TiddlyWiki as a means of bringing order out of chaos;

and (c) one further thought, I’d be very sad to see replaced any of those terms that are so characteristic of and nearly synonymous with TiddlyWiki. For example and especially, “Tiddler”.

I like the idea of quirky and unique/invented naming. There is something a little bit cold and fulldull about a rename that’s based off “Note” or “Item” (though there are arguably logical ‘gets the idea across easier’ when introducing the idea to others)

And yet my revulsion to that word is the biggest reason I sit at the “it can’t be renamed quickly enough” end of the scale. But it sits alongside my (relevant context: Australian) “the country absolutely should have a new flag” opinion, and probably a few others that dont spring to mind at midnight - as things I feel strongly about, but accept that if it’s going to change, it probably wont be till an alternative catches enough of the collective consciousness get the ball properly rolling. In the meantime, every now and then I design a flag. Oh yeah, and ponder alternative names for TW too.

…should TW have a flag? Am I opening a can of worms? :sweat_smile:
