Is TiddlyTalk inviting for new (new-ish) users? I don't find

Thank you - for the idea and the lovely warm and welcoming blanket I’m seeing in my minds eye

On topic: I am so relieved to read that I am not alone in feeling overwhelmed when trying to use the forum. (I did in the end but felt unsure as to whether I used the right category and tag - and it took me quite a while to formulate my question due to being intimated by both the level of detail and clawless very knowledgeable persons there, as well as the lack of clear ‘do this if you need help with something rather basic’).

In the bright side: I was pleasantly surprised there were so few categories. Most fora have so many it takes a study to decide on the correct one - and if you do it wrong there’s always a not so polite mod to address your faux pas. Not here though (at least, not in the last 10 hours I first took a look here :grinning:

I did add a link to the Discussion Category to the default banner. Welcome to the TiddlyWiki 5 Discourse discussion group for end users

Now the second bullet point will directly lead to the Discussions category. … Just to be sure … Did you read the first paragraph?

What should we change there, to make it clear, that “every” question is welcome?

Welcome to the TiddlyWiki 5 Discourse discussion group for end users

Feel free to ask questions - we welcome newcomers, and are eager to help everyone get the most out of TiddlyWiki 5. Here’s a few guidelines and links to get you started:

  • Include your OS, Browser, Tiddlywiki version and other relevant details when asking a question so that the community can help you better.
  • If you are in doubt, where to post your questions, use: Discussion - Talk TW

Side note.

I’m not so sure that is doable. In the sense that we are in a text interface writing here. It is almost impossible to communicate through that how “open” here actually is! ???

It is certainly true this discussion group has many people who dedicated themselves to helping anyone and everyone at any level.

But how can you convey that at the start point for a newbie???

TT

Objectively, the text is clear, so I guess a solution along the lines of some of the suggestions* made in this thread would be more apt than actual textual changes.
(you seeing the blush of my cheeks shining through the screen for not having read the paragraph well enough… :flushed:)

But thinking of the ’ SQUIRREL!’ Charlie_Venio mentioned : perhaps leave it at the first two bullets and have the other text appear below it?
Now there is really so much out there requiring attention the word 'discussion’s the link threw me of because:

  1. I was looking for the words ’ help’, or ‘starting’ (or ’ for dummies’ - I mean, just deciding on what the right saver would be already tripped me up… (‘discussing’ is a two way street and no matter how much I regret it: I’m not bringing anything to any discussion at this point in time)
  2. Feeling a just a tad awkward about the above
  3. Generally aware that I’m missing the knowledge / vocabulary to be precise (think writing ‘multi-platform’ when it turns out I’m actually in need of ‘cross-platform syncing’…and then some)

Especially the last one is less of a personality aspect and more of a common issue I think.

*Of course it’s easy to also spout more time-consuming ideas other than a lay-out / format change but perhaps it’s useful nevertheless:
I found this line of thinking helpful. Perhaps instead of many bullets : one newbie tag pill or button leading straight to proper location / buttons that filter the available discussions along the lines of

  • I want to use TW - where / how to start (potential / absolute beginner)
  • I have TW up and running just fine - now what? (beginner to medior)
  • Tweaks, depths and other fine stuff (advance users / niche inquiries)

and / or a writing prompt for either a first time post, or a button so it can be used if you choose so, e.g.:

  • what do you want to use TW for (use case / ideal situation where everything goes as expected
  • what problem do you run into?
  • what OS, browser and cloud server do you (mostly) use
